Mridu’s Visit to Rukku Manni’s House
Mridu is a young girl who lives with her grandmother Tapi and grandfather Thatha in Chennai. One afternoon, Mridu goes along with Tapi to her aunt Rukku Manni’s place. There she meets her cousins Lalli, Ravi, and Meena. Everyone at Rukku Manni’s house is happy to see Mridu.
The Kitten
Ravi takes Mridu to the backyard where there is a thick bitter-berry bush. There, they find a small little kitten inside a torn football, drinking milk from a half-shell of a coconut. Meena tells Mridu that they found the kitten outside their house that morning and that they have named it Mahendravarma Pallava Poonai, or M P Poonai in short.
Ravi informs Mridu that the kitten belongs to a fine breed cat, a close relative of the lion family, like the one that Pallava kings used in their emblem. He claims that the kitten is a descendant of Mahabalipuram Rishi-Cat and cat goddess Bastet.
The “Kreech” Noise
While Ravi is boasting about his kitten, they hear a strange sound, “Kreech–!” from the window. Mridu is startled while Mahendran is frightened and jumps on a tray of red chilies kept under the sun for drying. Ravi informs her that it’s Lalli learning to play the violin.
The Beggar
Rukku Manni calls Ravi to send the beggar away, who has been coming to their house for a week. Ravi asks the beggar to leave, and he tells them that he will leave after taking rest for a while. The children feel sorry for him and start making plans to give him chappals.
The Gift
Mridu remembers seeing a pair of old grey chappals when she entered Ravi’s house. She asks Ravi whom they belong to. Ravi gives the chappals to the beggar, who goes away wearing them and blessing the children.
Later, the music teacher comes to leave and can’t find his chappals. Rukku Manni finds out that the children have given the music teacher’s chappals to the beggar. She gets angry but gives the teacher her husband’s new chappals.
Rukku Manni-the Loving Mother
The teacher calls Ravi a monkey, an incarnation of Lord Hanuman, which upsets Rukku Manni. She wants the teacher to leave immediately. After he leaves, she offers the children some snacks and thanks God that her husband doesn’t go to the office in chappals.

मृदु एक युवा लड़की है जो चेन्नई में अपनी दादी तापी और दादा थाथा के साथ रहती है। एक दोपहर, मृदु तापी के साथ अपनी चाची रुक्कू मन्नी के घर जाती है। वहां वह अपने चचेरे भाई लल्ली, रवि और मीना से मिलती है। रुक्कू मन्नी के घर पर सभी लोग मृदु को देखकर खुश हैं।
बिल्ली का बच्चा
रवि मृदु को पिछवाड़े ले जाता है जहां एक मोटी कड़वी बेरी झाड़ी है। वहां, वे एक फटे हुए फुटबॉल के अंदर एक छोटा बिल्ली का बच्चा पाते हैं, जो नारियल के आधे खोल से दूध पीते हैं। मीना मृदु को बताती है कि उन्हें उस सुबह अपने घर के बाहर बिल्ली का बच्चा मिला और उन्होंने इसे महेंद्रवर्मा पल्लव पूनाई, या संक्षेप में एमपी पूनाई नाम दिया है।

शिक्षक रवि को भगवान हनुमान का अवतार बंदर कहता है, जो रुक्कू मन्नी को परेशान करता है। वह चाहती है कि शिक्षक तुरंत चले जाएं। उसके जाने के बाद, वह बच्चों को कुछ स्नैक्स देती है और भगवान का शुक्रिया अदा करती है कि उसका पति चप्पल पहनकर ऑफिस नहीं जाता है।
