Masons, when they start upon a building,
Are careful to test out the scaffolding;

Make sure that planks won’t slip at busy points,
Secure all ladders, tighten bolted joints.

And yet all this comes down when the job’s done
Showing off walls of sure and solid stone.

So if, my dear, there sometimes seem to be
Old bridges breaking between you and me

Summary

This is a simple poem with a deeper significance. The poet takes a cue from the masons building a structure, securing it with scaffolding. Just as scaffolding, initially required for a structure to stand, till it gains its own strength, human relations are also the same. The poet believes that masons when they start a building, are careful about the scaffolding. If the scaffolding is strong and secure, they can go further, building the structure. Planks are kept carefully so as not to slip at busy points, ladders are secured, and bolts are tightened around the joints. However, once the building is complete, all the scaffolding comes down and is removed. Similarly, the poet addresses his friend, that in the case at any point of time his friend thinks that all the old ties between he and his friend are breaking, he/she should not fear or worry. He says that while we may have let the scaffolds fall but rest assured that they have built their wall. It means that they have a strong relationship. He wants to remind us that friendships are important in life. Here, Heaney makes a link between constructing scaffolding and building a friendship. Good friends don’t need outside help when they’ve taken the time to build a strong foundation.
