The Three Questions Long Summary

The King and his Three Questions

There was a king who believed that in order to be an effective ruler, he needed to have the answers to three key questions. These questions were:

  1. When is the best time to initiate a task?
  2. Who are the individuals he should heed to?
  3. What is the most crucial responsibility for him to fulfill?

The Solutions of the Wise Men

In search of answers, messengers were sent in all directions by the king. Although many wise men arrived, their responses varied greatly. Regarding the first question, some advised that the king should adhere to a schedule, while others argued that it was impossible to determine the appropriate time to undertake something in advance.

Similarly, for the second question, some wise men recommended that the king should follow the guidance of his advisers, while others believed that he should heed the words of the priest. Some argued that it was the doctor’s orders that the king should obey, while many favoured the soldiers. When it came to the third question, some wise men stated that science should be the king’s top priority, whereas others asserted that religion should be given precedence.

The King Meets A Wise Hermit

The king was dissatisfied with the conflicting answers he had received, and so he decided to consult a wise hermit who lived in the jungle. However, the hermit only saw ordinary people, so the king disguised himself as a commoner and left his horse and bodyguards behind before setting off for the hermit’s hut.

Upon arrival, the king found the hermit, an old man, digging in front of his house. After introducing himself and explaining his three questions, the hermit did not respond and continued with his work. The king offered to help, and together they dug until evening.

Despite their labour, the hermit still did not provide any answers to the king’s questions. As they rested, a visitor arrived, interrupting their conversation.

The Wounded Man

A man approached them, clutching his stomach in pain. The king tended to his wound, staunching the blood flow and providing water. Together with the hermit, they brought the injured man inside. Exhausted, the king dozed off on the floor while the man rested.

Upon awakening the next day, the king was surprised to hear the man asking for forgiveness. The wounded man confessed his original intent was to seek revenge on the king for killing his brother and taking his possessions. He had planned to kill the king on his return from the hermit’s abode. However, the king’s guards had inflicted injuries that would have killed him had the king not provided aid. The man deeply regretted his previous vengeful thoughts and vowed to serve the king loyally. The king forgave him and returned his property, pleased to have turned an enemy into a friend.

The Hermit Explains the Answers

The king sought out the hermit who was planting seeds in the beds they had dug the day prior. He asked the hermit one last time to answer his questions. The hermit responded that the king had already found the answers. Had the king not shown compassion for the hermit the day before, the hermit may have attacked him on his way and the king could have lost his life. Therefore, the most important moment was when the king was digging the bed, and the hermit was the most important person at that time.

When the wounded man arrived, the most crucial time was when he was receiving care, or else he would have perished without the opportunity for both parties to reconciling make amends. Thus, at that moment, the wounded man was the most important person, and the act of nursing him was the most significant task. The hermit advised the man that the most important time is “now” because it is the only moment when we have the power to take action. The most important person at any given moment is ourselves because the future is uncertain, and we cannot be sure of meeting anyone else. The most important job is to do good for others because we have been sent to this world for this noble purpose.
